why Jesus?

Because I believe the following things are true:
  1. Jesus is real.

  2. He is God - the second person of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  3. God knew that I was going to rebel against him.

  4. God knew that my rebellion would earn me God's punishment and eternal wrath in hell.

  5. God loved me and didn't want me to have to experience that punishment.

  6. God couldn't be unjust - that wouldn't be perfect, and He is perfect.

  7. So he found a way to avoid that. The only way. Jesus died on the cross. A swap. He died so we didn't have to. He died for me and for you. And he did it perfectly, and he did it for free, because he knew there was no way we could ever pay him back for that gift. All we have to do is accept what he's done for us and stop rebelling against him by following him.

  8. Jesus rose to life three days later, proving that death itself was defeated, that our sins were forgiven, and that instead of eternal punishment ahead of us, we have eternal life with God in a new heaven and a new earth. Not because we're perfect, but because He was. And is.

  9. God didn't leave us to just get on with life when we realise what he's done for us. When he went back to heaven (where he is now), he sent the Holy Spirit to live within us and help us to follow him.

And so I try to tell as many people as I can about Jesus, because he didn't just do this for me, but for you too. If this is new to you, then let me encourage you to think deeply about it. Get a copy of the gospel of Mark, or read it online here. You can read the whole thing in a couple of hours, so worst case, you've not lost much.

I've missed out so much that's exciting and encouraging, because it simply won't fit on this page, but I try to write about a bit of the Bible each day - you can find that in the reflections and sermons part of this website.

If you've got questions, why not sign up for a Christianity Explored course. We run them at Oxlow Lane Baptist Church, and they're happening at churches around the country. You can find a course close to you here. Or simply email me and we can chat about it.

Whatever you do, don't pass up on the opportunity to discover the most important thing in the world. Jesus, and the good news he has for you.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
